CMS - Editing websites

Nive CMS makes page editing for authors easy and intuitive. The web page looks the same in public mode and edit mode; the page and elements remain at the same location and in the same layout.

Switching into editor mode

By default the website is started in public mode without edit options. To switch into edit mode append /editor to the current url address and press enter.

The page will reload and display the page in edit mode including:

  • Nive toolbox
  • edit bars (below the content area and each column)
  • interactive content elements (the elements on the page themselves)

The toolbox is draggable by clicking on the header. It remembers its position throughout page reloads. The sections contained in the box include page and system options. Page options always refer to the current page.

Small edit bars at the bottom of each page and column provide options to handle page elements at these locations. The first icon lets you add elements, the second lists existing elements.

Hold the Ctrl-key pressed to disable the default behavior of linked page elements and load the edit bar only.

content elements on the page have now become interactive. Backgrounds will be colored yellow when the pointer enters the elements area and the element’s edit bar appears on click. This bar includes options for the specific element.

Some elements like links or linked images are already interactive themselves. A click on a link for example will load the new page and not the edit bar. Hold the Ctrl-key pressed to disable the default behavior and load the edit bar only.

Adding or editing pages

The toolbox offers two options for adding pages: Add new page as subpage and Add new page on the same level after this. A link to edit the current page’s settings is also provided.

These options open a form as an overlay to the current page. To cancel and close the form without saving just click outside the overlay.

The close button on the right part of the top additionally reloads the original page.

The overlay also contains tabs for available editor pages: edit, add, sort subpages and meta. You can switch between editor pages by clicking on the tabs.

Adding or editing page elements

Elements can be accessed either directly on the page by clicking on them or through the element list button contained in the edit bar at the end of the page or column.

Pages can be sorted in the toolbox’s subpages section by clicking on the up or down arrows or on the Sort subpages page linked in the toolbox.

Page elements are sorted on the page directly by clicking the elements edit bar’s up and down arrows.

Cut, Copy & Paste

Cut, Copy and Paste links are included in the toolbox and edit bars.

Using the workflow

Pages are linked to simple publishing workflow. When a page is created it is in draft mode and only visible in the editor. In public view it is not accessible. The toolbox contains a link to publish the page and move it from draft mode to public mode.

Published pages can also be revoked and moved back to draft mode.

Please note the root page is always public.

Disabling interactive elements

Depending on the design, templates and javascript used in a website, interactive page elements and 3rd party javascript may not work together as intended. To solve this use the option Disable interactive elements in the toolbox.

Exiting the editor

The toolbox contains links to exit the editor and log out. These will return you to the public mode of the website.
